ALOHA……I would like to thank all the Lions and partners who attended our South West Convention held at Croyde Bay, it was great to meet up with all the Lions and their partners attending Convention, enabling everyone to make new friends and to find out more about lionism. Also many thanks to all the officers who made the exhibition displays very interesting. Everyone was given the opportunity to meet Past International Director Gudrun Bjort Yngvadottir from Iceland; along with all the other guests including my own family.
During the Hawaiian Party Night I presented a Melvin Jones Fellowship to a surprised Mr Eddie Farwell, the founder of Children’s Hospice South West. And indeed to thank the Convention committee, who all worked very hard to make the event different and enjoyable for everyone. I believe we truly found Fun and Fellowship during this weekend.
During Convention the shop was selling bars of different flavoured chocolate for me – all the profits will go to my charity this year which is the Adult Hospices in the South West. I ask that all clubs support me with this charity as I believe times are hard for them when the need is getting greater. I have only 60 bars left to sell, so soon I will be able to donate over £160 to my charity.
Big congratulations to District Governor Elect Fred Broom, 1st Vice DG Elect Ian Snell and 2nd Vice DG Elect Peter Rowe. I’m sure you’ll all join me in wishing them a great year.
Following on from Convention I travelled by train to London to attend the UN Day with the Lions at the Houses of Parliament. Prior to this I along with the 8 members from 105SW had a brief tour inside the House from my local MP. Past International Director Howard Lee was the International representative and we had speakers from Handicap International, Water Aid, Consortium for Street Children, Blind Veterans UK and our Chairman of Council Simon Moss.
I am now three quarters the way through my year and I have enjoyed meeting all the Lions at their monthly meetings, socials and charters. All of you have made my year memorable for me, and one that I will never forget.
In May I will be attending the Multiple District Lions Convention in Eastbourne when the resolutions for Redistricting will be on the table. I was pleased that we were able to have an open discussion on this subject and our delegates will be able to vote on our behalf. Immediate Past District Governor Lion Alan Good will be presenting 105SW’s thoughts.
Membership in 105SW is still on the brink of 1200 members. We must put a stop to this decline in our membership somehow. The DG team will be putting on another Membership seminar in Exeter shortly and I hope that those members who were unable to attend will come and be able to take back to their clubs positive ways of recruiting and retaining members. If we could get our membership back to over 1250 we would be in a stronger position – this equates to every club having a net increase of one member. This is achievable !!!!
You can’t get far until you start doing something for somebody else
